We Have A Winner!

The Young Achievers’ award ceremony took place on March 20th 2014. These awards are a chance to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the youth of Sunderland. The awards are sponsored by many organisations from Nissan to Sunderland City Council and there are many different awards given out at the young achievers awards- one of which was won by a Bunker volunteer! David Barrow, who has worked on several projects at the bunker, won the music and performing arts category, and was delighted to collect his award at the ceremony that took place at The Stadium Of Light.

David volunteered with the bunkers rock school, a project in which young people of Sunderland get to form bands while learning to play instruments, along with working on organizing and performing at several events at The Bunker through The SundayClub. David was nominated by Stephen Fay, a youth worker at The Bunker, who had this to say about David and why he was nominated:

“The Bunker is ran by Monumental Music which is a Community Interest Company, so we rely a lot on volunteers to help out at our events and with our projects. David has, on several occasions, willingly given up his time to come and work with us. He has helped me a lot with the projects we run and I feel he has had an important part to play in encouraging some of the younger users of The Bunker to get involved in local music. I’m really proud of him and over the moon he won!”

David first got involved with The Bunker through the aforementioned Sunday Club, as a chance to get to know people who were interested in music and shared his passion to be in a band. From there he got involved in all the different things going on at The Bunker and became an important volunteer.

This Award highlights The Bunkers work with the youth of Sunderland.  The Rock school mentioned early is a great example of this, along with the creative apprenticeships and Singing Club that are currently based at The Bunker. So if you want to be involved with any of the projects, or just want to find out what else we do, get in touch with the bunker on 0191 567 1777 or head over to our ‘contact us’ section of our website.

Barry Hyde, The Futureheads

"The Bunker is a superb place to have in Sunderland, it is a breeding ground for talent and without it I doubt I would have ever become a professional musician. I have been going there for 15 years and it's better than ever. It's soulful, ethical and affordable and the city would be screwed without it. I love it."

"Sunderland owes a great deal to the Bunker. Not just because of the bands it has helped to nurture. Well known bands reveal only a fraction of the important work that the bunker does. The work the bunker does is truly invaluable and our City cannot do without it!
