The Bunker School Rocked the Summer!

Nathan Bull, our very own guitar tutor and community musician at The Bunker, took on our Summer School of Rock and made it a complete success. Working with learners from instrument tuition – as well as newbies -, he took them through the ins and outs of putting a band together along with Adrian Dunn.

Together they delivered a week long workshop for young people aged between 8-16 years old.

During their time that they spent with us, the participants learnt how to play a range of different instruments, how to really focus their musical skills and they arranged a piece of music that they then practised together and recorded on the Friday of that week.

Under the direction of Nathan & Adrian, they developed new techniques for writing lyrics and composing songs, which will help them with future tracks – should they decide to put a band together!

The song structures were created using a special app that Nathan made himself which helped to generate different chords allowing them to easily piece together a tune. This was also fun for the participants, as they got to use a new software to assist them with their arrangement.

Cameron, 8 years old, said, “I thought it was a lot of fun, it was good to meet new people and I learnt a lot about music. It was very educational”. When asked if he would attend Summer School of Rock again, he said that it was definitely a go-ahead, we just need to tell him when!

Nathan was very proud of the individuals that took part that week and had this to say: “the whole event went really well and I was so surprised at the progress that the kids were making, I would happily do it again!”

The Bunker gained a new record for participants joining their workshop this time around!

"The Bunker is a superb place to have in Sunderland, it is a breeding ground for talent and without it I doubt I would have ever become a professional musician. I have been going there for 15 years and it's better than ever. It's soulful, ethical and affordable and the city would be screwed without it. I love it."

"Sunderland owes a great deal to the Bunker. Not just because of the bands it has helped to nurture. Well known bands reveal only a fraction of the important work that the bunker does. The work the bunker does is truly invaluable and our City cannot do without it!
