Genfactor

The Genfactor is a competition organised by the social enterprise, Gentoo Group. This competition gives talented young people from across Sunderland, the platform to showcase their talents whilst competing for the winner’s title. The event was supported by a number of local businesses including Statex Colour Print, the University of Sunderland, the MAC Trust, the Works, Sun FM, Sunderland City Council, Ashmore Consulting, Thompson Waste Centre, Rough Diamond Entertainment and Corporate Fun Fairs. Around 1,000 people attended the final to see the 16 hopefuls compete in Gentoo’s annual talent show.

This year’s Genfactor final was held at Rainton Meadows Arena on Wednesday 28 October, where a total of 16 acts performed to a live audience of hundreds of people and a panel of five judges. We got VIP tickets courtesy of Design your own future as a ‘thank you’ for hosting their event and attended to show support to the local talent in Sunderland.

Schoolgirl Mia Carney, 12, has taken the next step to stardom after winning the city’s annual Genfactor competition. Second place in the contest was awarded to Dance Jam. The dance troupe, aged 11 to 16, had the arena bouncing with their dance mash-up. Meanwhile, five-piece indie rockers Supersonic came in third place. The group, all aged 14 and pupils at Houghton Kepier School, impressed judges with Jet’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’.

Both Olivia Glover and Jane Usher made it into the final also, we are really proud of them because they have been working really hard to get to this stage by attending our very own Singing Club!

"The Bunker is a superb place to have in Sunderland, it is a breeding ground for talent and without it I doubt I would have ever become a professional musician. I have been going there for 15 years and it's better than ever. It's soulful, ethical and affordable and the city would be screwed without it. I love it."

"Sunderland owes a great deal to the Bunker. Not just because of the bands it has helped to nurture. Well known bands reveal only a fraction of the important work that the bunker does. The work the bunker does is truly invaluable and our City cannot do without it!
